Back in 2017, phs Besafe helped plant a total of 250 trees in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The project which is run by the non-profit organisation One Tree Planted, aims to combat the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest by providing financial support to a number of amazing reforestation groups located around the world.

This year, we continued our commitment to helping to sustain the rainforest’s 44,000 native plant and animal species and 2.5 million insects by teaming up with Shield 360 and One Tree Planted for a second time. We’re proud to announce that this led to us helping to plant a further 250 trees in the rainforest, bringing the current total to 500. This will counteract one tonne of CO2 (carbon dioxide) being released into the air each year.

Why is this important for the health of our planet?

The Amazon Rainforest is thought to produce more than 20% of the world’s oxygen, it’s often referred to as the ‘lungs of the earth’. This is why it’s all the more vital for us to do all we can to protect it from deforestation.

Deforestation has a detrimental effect on both our health and that of our environment. Not only is it threatening the survival of the rainforest’s wildlife (with every tree housing thousands of plant, animal and insect species) but trees remove harmful CO2 emissions from the air. CO2 is emitted from planes, trains and cars burning fossil fuels, however, using electrical equipment and manufacturing plastic are also responsible for its pollution of the air.

Continued exposure to CO2 can cause people to feel unwell by causing a host of unpleasant symptoms. These include headaches, nausea, seizures, dizziness and tinnitus (a ringing in the ears). However, CO2 is also harming our planet by gradually raising its temperature. This presents a threat to natural life by causing sea levels to rise and our oceans to become more acidic, and therefore inhabitable.

As well as counteracting rising CO2 levels in the air, our continued work with Shield 360 and One Tree Planted is also helping the 500 or so indigenous tribes that live amongst the Amazon Rainforest. These indigenous tribes rely on the rainforest’s trees to provide them with access to vital shelter, medicines, food and work.

What else are we doing to the help the environment?

At phs Besafe, we do all we can to ensure the products and services we provide have as little a negative impact on the planet as possible. Just one of the ways we do this is by reducing the need for our clients to employ additional uniform collectors for the laundering and disposal of your workwear. This lowers CO2 emissions by reducing the number of vehicles required to travel to and from your site on a regular basis. We also construct our protective workwear to ensure it lasts for longer, reducing the frequency in which it needs to be disposed of.

This year phs Besafe partner, Shield 360, also announced that all the products they manufacture will now be delivered in 100% recycled packaging. This is something that phs Besafe are also hoping to achieve in the near future.
